Wow! These Kids Learned to Read by Reading to This Tire Fire

The problems of childhood literacy and the raging Jefferson City tire fire came together in a big way last weekend.

"Kids need to learn how to read, and someone's got to read to our city's giant tire fire, so we put two and two together," said Jerry Anderson, the city's waste-management specialist.

From ages 8 to 12, the city's kids were brought to the raging tire inferno and told to read their favorite books so they could improve their reading skills.

"We hope that people will see these kids reading to this tire fire, and it'll convince them to start a tire fire of their own some day," Anderson said.
