In the fall of 2014, hackers leaked a torrent of data from Sony Pictures, including hundreds of thousands of employee emails. This leak was how Jennifer Lawrence learned she was paid less than her male co-stars for American Hustle. It led her to write an essay titled “Why Do I Make Less Than My Male Co-Stars?” for Lena Dunham’s feminist newsletter, Lenny.
The Hunger Games was the big commercial breakthrough of Jennifer Lawrence’s career. But she almost didn’t accept the role, nervous about how serious fame would affect her life. She slept on the offer for three days before she agreed to play the part.
Jennifer Lawrence is wicked smart, kid. Knowing early on that acting was her passion, she wanted to leave school as quickly as possible. But not by dropping out. She just graduated two years early, and with an almost-perfect 3.9 GPA at that. Not too shabby.
Lawrence was such a huge fan of Honey Boo-Boo that she crashed her car when she thought she saw the child star in a parade. What she actually saw was a float in a breast cancer parade. The float said “boobs,” not “boo-boo.”
Lawrence famous played the blue-skinned mutant Mystique in X-Men: First Class. Her elaborate blue makeup took hours to paint onto her every day. It also stained the bathtub in her apartment blue. She almost lost her security department over that.
Lawrence is the third-youngest person to score an Academy Award nomination for best actress. She has been out-younged only by Beasts of the Southern Wild's Quvenzhane Wallis and Whale Rider's Keisha Castle-Hughes, who were 9 and 13 at the time of their nominations, respectively.
Lawrence is a classic fangirl, and has had several thirsty moments meeting her favorite stars. Notably, she melted when she met John Stamos, whom she called “Uncle Jesse” repeatedly. Stamos thought she was on drugs.
Jennifer Lawrence does not wash her hands after she pees. She doesn’t believe hand washing gets rid of germs. Her nickname on the set of the first Hunger Games movie, in which she played the hero Katniss Everdeen, was Katpiss Neverclean.
To prepare for her role at Katniss Everdeen, Lawrence learned to shoot a recurve bow. And her trainer was the real deal. Four-time Olympic archer Khatuna Lorig of Georgia trained Lawrence to a 50-percent bullseye rate.
Lawrence is a huge fan of living legend Meryl Streep. But that didn’t stop her from throwing a touch of shade at her idol at the Oscars. After Lawrence won the best actress award over Streep, she said in her acceptance speech, “I beat Meryl!”
Prince Harry from England has (or had, at least) a crush on Jennifer Lawrence. So, being all toffee-nosed and British, he dispatched an aide to ask her for a date. She said no, possibly because he asked her out the way third-graders due. Also possibly because she doesn’t date guys who dress as Nazis for costume parties. Also she was dating the Coldplay guy at the time.
Lawrence pissed of PETA with her breakout role in the 2010 movie Winter’s Bone. That’s because for a scene in which her character killed and skinned a squirrel, Lawrence actually did the deed. She learned how from her brother’s friend, who’s probably really creepy.
Before she got her acting career off the ground, Lawrence worked as a model. She didn’t take to it too well, though. Shooting a football scene for an Abercrombie and Fitch ad, Jennifer used Method acting and got all flushed and sweaty. The other models thought she was gross.
