In 2009, MTV introduced us to the Jersey Shore. For six seasons we got a glimpse into the hook ups and drama of real New Jersey singles. It was like a train wreck. You didn't want to watch it, but you couldn't look away.
Recently, the former cast members of Jersey Shore have been posting Instagram photos of each other. The photos have been captioned with phrases along the lines of "love these girls forever." So of course, tongues have started wagging!
Reps MTV said that the photos were not from an MTV project. But since there have been so many photos, the rumor mill was fed. Additionally, cast members have been very vocal about how they would love to do a "reboot" of the show.
And if the Instagram photos weren't evidence enough, there's also been filming. “They were here [on June 16] for a couple hours and had dinner and played boardwalk games,” said Toby Wolf, the director of marketing for Jenkinson’s Boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach. He mentioned that Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Jenny "JWoww" Farley were involved in the filming.
Additionally, city officials from Asbury Park have said that film permit applications have been filed. Bright Road Productions, the company producing the show, have put in applications to film. The name the applications were filed under is "Roadtrip Reunion."
Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino confirmed that a reunion will take place. The reunion will air later this year, although there is no official release date. Sorrentino said that he is "surprised" the reunion didn't happen sooner.
“The stars have aligned, and it’s time to make reality TV great again,” said Sorrentino. “[The reunion] really is long overdue. It really is unbelievable. I mean every single person on that cast was just an unbelievable personality, and put us all together and you really don’t know what you’re going to get … I’ll be honest I’m surprised somebody hasn’t done it before this. It’s been about five years, and as soon as there was a hint of it online, it’s trending. That just tells you something right there.”
The cast have all led full lives since the show ended five years ago. Sorrentino struggled with an opioid addiction and sobriety. Paul "Pauly D" DelVeccio started dating Aburey O'Day after meeting the singer on "Famously Single." It has been a journey!
Many cast members have moved on to serious relationships. Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Jenni "JWoww" Farley are both married with children. But despite thie fact that there's not going to be nearly as much hooking up, the reunion should still be just as entertaining!
Sorrentino said that even though the gang is older and wiser, they're still just as cool. “It really comes down to the personalities put together and the dynamic of that. At the end of the day we’re probably the coolest 30-year-olds you’ll ever meet,” said Sorrentino.
In fact, because the show is no longer about twenty-somethings living their best lives, Sorrentino says their current situations might make for more interesting television. “We’ve matured and that’s what happens in life — you grow older. Some of us have families but at the end of the day all of us are in relationships now, so I really think it will be cool to mix it up a little bit," said Sorrentino.
The reunion, which is not affiliated with MTV, will air later this year. The reunion will be either a one-time special or a few episodes, rather than a full series pickup. “2017 seems to be the return of ‘Jersey Shore’," says Sorrentino.
