American Pie came out in 1999, and quickly established itself as a teen comedy classic. It had everything you could want in a dumb teen movie - grads trying to lose their virginity, a kid getting caught masturbating, and even Eugene Levy. This movie had it all.
The movie was filled with classic moments that stay with you forever. To this day, when you think of Jason Biggs, you likely think of him having sex with pie. It might not be how he wants to be remembered, but it's the truth.
Of course, there were many other big teen comedies that existed before American Pie. There were many huge ones in the '80s, includingFast Times At Ridgemont High and Revenge Of The Nerds. And there were more in the '90s, but none as big as Pie.
American Pie was part of a new era of comedies for teens (or, at least, aimed at teens). Some of these movies may have come out before American Pie, many of these came shortly after, and some simply contain some of American Pie's DNA. Here's just a sample.
In this movie from 2000, college student Josh (Breckin Meyer) hooked up with Beth (Amy Smart)...which was somehow caught on tape, and the tape accidentally sent to his long distant girlfriend. Naturally, they have to go on a road trip to keep her from seeing the tape. This movie also stars Tom Green and, naturally, Sean William Scott.
When you think of teen comedies, you don't often think of Lewis Black. However, you just might think of Justin Long and Jonah Hill. InAccepted (2006), Long plays Bartleby, a high school grad who can't get into any college, so he starts his own.
Can't Hardly Wait came out a year before American Pie, and is more of a light teen comedy than a raunchy one. Still, it's about a bunch of high schoolers at a big party on graduation night, and features an all-star cast of teen movies, including Seth Green and Jennifer Love Hewitt.
This 2008 movie is not Road Trip, but it's about a road trip. 18-year-old virgin Ian (Josh Zuckerman) and his friends take a trip so he can hook up with a girl he met online. And, once again, this movie also co-stars Seth Green (but this time not as one of the teens, but as an Amish man).
From 2004, this movie is about Matthew (Emile Hirsch) an uptight student who needs to learn to let loose and have fun. Naturally, he gets that opportunity when he dates the new girl next door, Danielle (Elisha Cuthbert), who just happens to be a former porn star.
Dorky guys in teen comedies tend to have a habit for falling for for extremely attractive female students that they've put on a pedestal. That's the case in this 2009 movie, where geeky valedictorian Denis (Paul Rust) throws out his commencement speech to profess his love for cheerleader Beth (Hayden Panettiere). It got mostly poor reviews, but was directed by Chris Columbus (Mrs. Doubtfire, two Harry Potter movies).
Many teen comedies center around high school boys attempting to lose their virginity before going off to college. But the gender is flipped in 2013's The To Do List, starring Aubrey Plaza as virgin valedictorian Brandy attempting to shed her uptight image. So she makes a sexual to-do list to complete before the summer comes to an end.
In this 2006 movie, three girls in high school all realize they've been dating charming womanizer John Tucker. So they get back at him by having the awkward, clumsy new girl Kate (Brittany Snow) steal his heart, because that's a perfectly sensible plan for revenge. The movie co-stars Ashanti, because why not?
As hard as it may be to believe, but it's already been 10 years since the release of Superbad. Jonah Hill and Michael Cera play high school seniors trying to get alcohol party, as Hill tries to impress his home-ec partner, played by Emma Stone. Co-written by (and co-starring) Seth Rogen, it's not really in the same raunchy category as American Pie, but has arguably surpassed it as being more of a classic.
