Dennis the Menace was originally a comic strip created by cartoonist Hank Ketcham. It was originally published in 1951, and since boomed into a massive franchise, spawning a TV show, three movies and even a video game.
The first live-action Dennis the Menace film was Dennis the Menace: Dinosaur Hunter, a made-for-TV movie that premiered in 1987. Although, the 1959 television series was also live-action. But, the most famous and star-studded movie was the 1993 version. The film brings back a lot of nostalgia for '90s kids, so we want to take a look back and see what the cast is up to today.
Yep, I totally forgot that Christopher Lloyd was in this movie. Albeit, he does look like a creepy disheveled version of himself. In the film, he plays Switchblade Sam, a dirty rotten burglar who certainly messed with the wrong little troublemaker.
Don’t worry, Christopher Lloyd isn’t as on the edge of death as he appears to be in that photo. That’s a still from a guest role in the series 12 Monkeys. So, as you can see, he’s still very much alive and still acting a good deal. He’s also had guest roles on The Big Bang Theory and he’s recently starred in a few films.
Yep, I also didn’t have any idea that Natasha Lyonne and her ginger curls were in this movie. I guess I could go for another viewing. She played Dennis’ sassy babysitter, Polly. She was 14-years-old when she played this role.
Yep, she’s the only one from the movie that looks almost the same today as she did back in 1993. Today, most people would recognize her from her starring role as Nicky Nichols in Orange is the New Black. Oh, and she’s still rocking that massive head of ginger curls.
It looks like we have two Back to the Future alums in Dennis the Menace (the first obviously being Lloyd). In the movie, Lea plays Alice Mitchell, Dennis’ super sweet mom (pretty much the same role as Back to the Future). Dennis had a dad, too, obviously (a ‘50s-based comic turned ‘90s family comedy isn’t going to feature a single mom).
Robert Stanton played Henry Mitchell, Dennis’ dad. Mitchell has had some minor roles on Orange is the New Black and Law and Order.
Lea has had a successful acting career following Dennis the Menace and the Back to the Future franchise. She’s had some guest roles in TV shows like Scorpion and Switched at Birth. She will also be starring in the upcoming Little Women remake.
In the movie, Amy Sakasitz played Margaret Wade. Margaret was kind of a bully and was mean to Dennis. But, Dennis was a menace after all, so maybe he deserved it a little bit. Margaret was totally adorable, though.
Amy is a total mystery these days. Dennis the Menace was her last role in a film. She does have a couple social media accounts, which you can follow. She’s married, and she likes to take pictures of food, nature and bugs.
I absolutely love Joan Plowright. I mean, Dame Joan Plowright (Yeah, she’s super distinguished). In the movie, Joan played Mrs. Wilson. Even though her husband and Dennis didn’t get along, she was always the sweetest to Dennis.
Don’t be fooled by that adorable face, Dennis was nothing but trouble. Mason Gamble played the little scoundrel and he reportedly beat out 20,000 other kids for the role. He did an excellent job, so it’s easy to see why producers chose him.
Mason had some minor acting roles as a teenager and a young man. He had a couple roles in CSI: Miami in 2006 and he was in a 2010 film called Golf in the Kingdom (pictured). But, he has since moved on to other things. He originally went to school to be a dentist, but now he is a marine biologist.
But, perhaps the most notable star from the movie is Walter Matthau. He played the grumpy Mr. Wilson, neighbor to the troublemaker next door. Despite how much Dennis drove Mr. Wilson crazy, there wasn’t anything that Mr. Wilson wouldn’t do for Dennis.
Walter Matthau was one of America’s most beloved actors. He began his career in 1950, and went on to become half of one of the most hilarious buddy duos in film history. He and Jack Lemmon starred in several films together, usually as two opposites who don’t get along, only to become friends by the end of the movie, i.e., The Odd Couple, Grumpy Old Men. Sadly, Walter died in 2000, seven years after Dennis the Menace.
