Most people who are trying to lose weight will tell you that if fruit could only taste more like a burger then they would eat more fruit. These people (OK me) will blame broccoli for being too bland for not losing weight. Or apples doing nothing to curb my sweet tooth.
Maybe we’re asking the impossible in hoping that something healthy can taste like a burger or chocolate. (And no, don’t even mention a mushroom burger because that is still not meat). Anyway, I thought I was asking the impossible, I really did, until I came across the jackfruit.
This huge piece of fruit tastes like pork. It really does. In fact, it’s already gaining popularity in the US among the vegan and vegetarian community because they say it tastes like pulled pork after an hour of cooking.
This is because the jackfruit is being dubbed the “miracle crop.” Researchers believe that this fruit could help save millions of people from starvation. The jackfruit could finally be the answer to this very pressing issue.
The fruit is loaded with the good stuff. The jackfruit is a “great source of Vitamin C and the seeds are rich in protein, potassium, calcium, and iron.” But this is not your typical tiny fruit like a banana that you can carry in your bag all day long. Some jackfruits can weigh up to 100 pounds.
The tree is even good for four-legged creatures. The leaves of a jackfruit tree are “a great source of food for goats and other farm animals.” Seriously, this tree must have come down from heaven or something.
Biotechnology researcher, Shyamala Reddy, explains that “it’s a miracle. It can provide so many nutrients and calories – everything. If you just eat 10 or 12 bulbs of this fruit, you don’t need food for another half a day.”
A plant biologist from the Chicago Botanic Garden, Nyree Zerega, agrees with Reddy’s statement, saying “in Bangladesh, where jackfruit is the national fruit, it is often considered the second-most important crop after mangos…and if you have space to grow something, you almost always have a jackfruit tree — due to both its valuable fruits and timber.”
The jackfruit is also quite versatile. It can be eaten raw when it’s ripe and soft. It can also be cooked in a variety of dishes. People have used the jackfruit in curry and stir-fries. But it has even been used to make fries or as a substitute for flour. OK, this fruit is becoming annoyingly perfect.
Clearly, this fruit is perfect. Maybe annoyingly perfect. Avocados around the world are trembling in their skin as they watch the jackfruit gain more popularity on Instagram. Seriously though, a fruit that could end starvation? That sounds and tastes amazing.
