On January 16, 2016, April let Ludivine out to do her doggy business in their home of Elkmont, Alabama. It was just like any other day. However, on this day, the Elkmont Half Marathon was to take place, and was just about to get underway.
Lu stayed on the course for the entire 13.1 miles. Even more impressive, she finished so high despite taking a few breaks to wander off, sniff animal carcasses and romp in the water. And again, this was all on a whim. Imagine if she actually trained!
Even more humorous, Hamlin didn't even know Lu had joined the race until she received a text from a friend explaining what had happened. She rushed down to the finish line in time to see her pup being awarded an honorary medal. She was shocked to say the least.
At the end of the long trek, Lu didn't even seem tired. She posed for pictures with all the fans, and even buried a piece of pizza that was given to her to save for later. But as soon as she got back home, she crashed and took a well-deserved rest.
Ever since her amazing run, Lu has become a local celebrity. She's brought attention to charitable causes in her hometown, and as a way of saying thank you, she was named “First Dog of Limestone County.” Just another medal for her collection.
This year's Elkmont Half Marathon was renamed the "Hound Dog Half" in Lu's honor, and benefited the local high school. Lu was also recently fitted with a microchip, to ensure that she doesn't roam too far off in the future. After all, this feisty little gal loves to run even more than Tom Cruise.
