One easy way to break the ice with someone new as a kid (and even now) is by asking, "What's your favorite color?" You can find out a lot about someone by what they say. Especially if they say purple... you know who you are.
It's a blue-green shade that resembles shallow waters. It's very peaceful and lovely, to be sure. Also, the mix of blue and green might suggest it's literally the Earth's favorite color, considering those are the colors that most make up this space orb we call home.
The color was designed by a UNESCO worker from Dundee, Annie Marrs. She says this color is a combination of the blue, green and grey tones of the River Tay in her hometown. However, her creation has led to some debate.
They invited people to look at a near infinite palette of colors and choose their favorite shade. 30,000 people across 100 countries voted, and the results were averaged together. Hull 2017 Chief Executive Martin Green then announced the winner was Marrs Green... not suspicious at all.
"It feels absolutely amazing. It's an absolute privilege to have a color named after me. It’s been a surreal experience but a very special one and quite overwhelming at times. I can see us having to redecorate."
So how do you feel about the result? Taste in color is subjective and can change, just like this cake. But for now, Marrs Green is a pretty great favorite color of the world. It's almost the same shade as a certain statue that reminds us we are all free to make friends who enjoy any color... even purple.
