Maybe you think whistling is still a thing to get a woman’s attention. Maybe you want to hail a cab the loud way. Whatever it is, if you’re here, then it’s because you need to learn how to whistle — now!
You need to decide the finger combination you want to use to help you create that loud whistling sound. You see, your fingers will help keep your tongue back. Moreover, they also keep your lips “tucked back over your teeth.”
Many people use different finger combinations to learn how to whistle. Two popular ones are the “two-handed” and the “middle/index finger combo.” Both work, you just need to figure out which one feels better.
For the two-handed option, use your middle and index fingers on your two hands together and make sure your thumbs hold the ring and pinky fingers down. In doing so, you’ll create kind of an “A shape.” For the one-handed option, do an “OK Sign” with your thumb and index finger.
When you’ve mastered this, move on to the lips. “Wet and tuck your lips back over your teeth.” As the experts explain it, the lips should look the same as when you pretend like you’ve lost all your teeth. Everyone’s done that at some point in their life.
It’s important that your lips “cover your teeth.” That’s the key to a successful whistle. The tucking varies from one person to the other and you will need to practice and see which feels best for you. When your lips are tucked, your fingers will help keep the lower lip put.
What your finger combinations will do is to keep your tongue back. It’s the only way you’re going to get that loud whistle. Thing is, it’s not as simple as pushing your tongue back — it won’t magically lead you to do it.
What is recommended is that you fold the tip of your tongue on itself. Your fingers will help you hold this down. “Place the tip of your fingers underneath your tongue right at the tip. Push the tip of your tongue back with your fingers.”
Keep pushing your tongue back “until your first knuckle reaches your bottom lips.” This rule applies for the two-handed combo as well as the one-handed. As with everything, this method will vary from one person to the next.
So, your mouth should be closed on your fingers. You don’t want any air to come out from there otherwise you won’t get that piercing sound. You should only feel the air going out from over your bottom lip, nowhere else.
Don’t expect to make a huge sound on the first try. It takes practice. Also, be wary about how much you practice — make sure you take breaks otherwise you could end up hyperventilating and you might even feel dizzy.
It can take you some time but if you get the mechanics working right, then you will be able to whistle. After that, you can be a badass all you want. Whatever you need, whoever you want to talk to, you can just whistle.
