From there, the photo went from being shared to being memed. Photoshop experts created new versions of the Pence pic. For instance there's this one, where we see Pence's desire to touch things is not unlike that of Patrick from SpongeBob SquarePants.
On the bright side, at least none of these Pence's have signs. On the other hand, why has Pence started multiplying? Is this a weird side effect of having touched the NASA equipment in the first place?
NASA added that, "Procedures require the hardware to be cleaned before tiles are bonded to the spacecraft, so touching the surface is absolutely okay." They also said that anything that could absolutely not be touched "would have had a protective cover over it."
Pence also tried to shift the blame to someone other than himself, saying "Marco Rubio dared me to do it!" But did Rubio triple-dog-dare him to do it? Because if he didn't, Pence could have simply said no.
So you have to give Pence credit for at least going along with a joke. When being mocked, sometimes the best thing to do is join in on the mockery rather than fight against it. In politics, it can sometimes be helpful to not take yourself too seriously.
