According to Reddit user RenaKunisaki, “Mario is a celebrity, and Wario is the stereotypical creepy overzealous not-quite-sane stalker fan.”
So where does he get this theory from? Well, Mario is obviously a well-known celebrity who is famous for saving Princess Peach and the Mushroom Kingdom on numerous occasions. Wario wears the same exact outfit as Mario in different colors, his name is almost the same as Mario, he lives in a giant castle that has a huge statue of Mario in it. Is he obsessed with him? It looks like it.
Bowser Jr. makes his first appearance disguised as Shadow Mario at the beginning of Super Mario Sunshine. He frames Mario for tagging the island with graffiti and then kidnaps Princess Peach, reveals his true identity and then claims that Princess Peach is his mother. Some think that Bowser was lying when he told his son that the Princess was his mother. But the Princess never denies it and no one ever discusses who his real mother is so…. What do you think?
Some believe that Princess Peach is not the innocent little peach that they make her out to be.
So, is Mario really saving Princess Peach in every game or does she have another agenda? One fan on Reddit posted this theory: “What if, Princess Peach is really just using the Mario Games (which are plays) as [propaganda] to lead you to believe that Bowser is the villain, when in reality Peach is an evil dictator who wants to oppress the people of the Mushroom Kingdom.”
They have a point. The fact that Princess Peach never ups the security in the Mushroom Kingdom after multiple abductions does seem a little fishy. If this is the case, do we think Mario is in on the game?
4. Super Mario Bros. Is Another Version Of The Legend Of Zelda
These two games were developed at the same time, and some gamers believe that the Mario Universe is just a retelling of The Legend of Zelda. They believe that Mario is Link, Princess Peach is Zelda, and Bowser is Gannon. The setting, the Mushroom Kingdom, is Hyrule. The eight worlds in Super Mario could be representative of the eight temples in The Legend of Zelda. They both have various themes that connect them, including a water world in Mario and a water temple in Zelda.
Reddit user lopezrican304 provides evidence that Yoshi is actually a Pokemon. One clue is that “Yoshi eggs and Pokemon eggs look the same, and both the Yoshi and the Pokemon obey the person they hatch with. Yoshis let their master ride them and control their [abilities] (eating enemies, flying, spitting fireballs, etc) and Pokemon battle for their trainer.”
So if Yoshi is a Pokemon, then Mario would be a Pokemon trainer and the Mushroom Kingdom would be a region like Kanto or Johto.
In Super Mario Galaxy 2 there is a group of shadowy figures staring down at the characters from a cliff. The game calls these creatures “Hell Valley Sky Tree.” You see another one of these creatures in World 4-4 of Super Mario 3D Land. The fan theory suggests that these creatures are demons from another dimension who have invaded the world of Mario.
In Luigi’s Mansion, Luigi enters the haunted mansion and when he crosses the threshold and if walking around with a flashlight when there is a flash of lightning causing shadows that appear to show Luigi hanging. Some believe that shadow shows that Luigi commits suicide. Others suggest that Bowser is also dead. There is a part of the game where Luigi speaks to a fortune teller who she makes it sound as if Bowser is dead. Some believe that King Boo at the end of the game is the ghost of Bowser.
8. The Mario Bros. Father Was Killed By Donkey Kong
It is believed that the monkey that throws barrels at Jumpman in Donkey Kong is actually Cranky Kong. Cranky Kong is Donkey Kong’s father which would make Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr. This could also mean that Jumpman is Mario and Luigi’s father.
Redditer JustEmbarassing explains in more detail: “Jumpman falls to the ground and lies down with a halo floating above his head. He’s dead. As the antagonist of the game, he has no extra lives. Because it’s impossible for this to be the Mario of games separate from the DK arcade games, he has never come back in a story that takes place after this. Even Donkey Kong 3, which takes place right after DKJ, doesn’t feature him. Donkey Kong kills Jumpman, who may in fact be Mario & Luigi's father.” Confused? Here is a complete breakdown.
9. Shy Guys Are The Result Of Experimental Mutation
Shy Guys wear different colored robes and a white mask on their face. So, why don’t they show their faces? Gamers have come up some theories. Some believe that they are secretly part of an "international mercenary-spy conglomerate enslaved Shaolin monks." Another theory suggests Shy Guys are experimental mutations, which is why they don’t show their faces.
Need more information? Game Theory made a 12-minute-long video presenting their case. Mario’s outfit in Super Mario Bros is red and black, the colors of the communist flag. He eats red mushrooms. They believe that Mario’s hat and mustache are similar to Joseph Stalin’s and at the end of each level in Super Mario Bros., he lowers the current flag and raises his own flag above the castle that appears to have Communist star.
All of the Mario games are from Mario’s perspective, so it would be pretty easy for Mario to point the blame all on Bowser. Reddit user Fathomx1 explains Mario’s evil ways: “Well it is obvious that Mario is a racist pro-human supremacist. In Super Mario Bros. 3 it’s clear that the Princess is married to Bowser, and that the humans have made a treaty with the reptile people to gain the ability to change themselves into animals as well (this magic was previously only accessible through use of magic suits). However, Mario cannot allow this as it would undermine the racial purity of humanity, and so he kills Bowser’s children and changes the human rulers back by force.”
Mario is known for his work as a plumber so how could he be Dr. Mario? According to Reddit user mswanco, he couldn’t be. The user believes that Dr. Mario is actually the third Mario brother. When talking about his appearance in the Super Smash Bros. Melee he explains, “He has a similar moveset to Mario and Luigi, and while Luigi is a lighter and floatier comparison to Mario, DM is a heavier, harder hitting alternative. Doctor Mario’s hair is also lighter than Mario’s, taking an almost blonder or more auburn tint to the plumber’s dark brown hair. Mario also seems to be more athletic than DM as he is faster and can wall jump, whereas the doctor can not.”
When looking at the theme that Mario is evil, gamers also believe that he is also responsible for taking the souls of innocent toads. Reddit user SamuelEarl66 shares this dark theory: “If you are a theory lover like me you should already know of the countless mushroom kingdom residents Mario murdered during the first game. For those that don’t know, the instruction manual for SMB1 states the the inhabitants of the mushroom kingdom were turned into bricks (yes, the exact same ones which Mario smashed on his journey). If the bricks are mushroom kingdom residents then how are there coins inside them? What if Mario was actually harvesting the souls of innocent toads???”
In the video game Super Paper Mario, Luigi is supposed to be the reincarnation of Count Bleck’s Great Grandfather which makes him the perfect host for the Chaos Heart. The Chaos Heart is able to destroy every world in existence so it needs to be controlled. Fans believe that he stays by Mario’s side because he know that if he loses control, Mario can bring him back to life.
15. The Super Mario Universe Is One Big Stage Play
One of the most popular and oldest fan theories is that all of the stories being told in Super Mario are stage plays. They believe that Mario, Luigi and the rest of the clan are actors playing a role. Fans could have come up with this idea because in Super Mario Bros. 2, the character select screen is set up like a stage. They do this again in Super Mario Bros. 3. The curtain rises and platforms hang from the ceiling. Blocks are bolted into the walls and it is made to look like an actual stage play.
